The unique silhouette and atmosphere in Potsdam is created through historic parks, gardens and lakes, through church domes and castle-like buildings with golden statues. <\/span><\/h5>\n

Crossing the old city center towards the sandstone-colored fa\u00e7ade of the reconstructed palace that is now Museum Barberini it feels l like you\u2019re on vacation, like a trip south. The building\u2019s courtyard opens onto to vast terraces of a canal with a view of a beautiful island on the opposite bank.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tempting to follow the riverbank and get lost in the wide garden landscape, but remind yourself, you came here for the art, and this is breathtaking. <\/span><\/h6>\n

With the Museum Barberini<\/a> a new cultural attraction came to Potsdam. Exhibitions range from the Old Masters to contemporary art with a focus on impressionism. Based on works from the collection of Hasso Plattner, the museum\u2019s founder and patron, the Museum Barberini presents three temporary exhibitions each year with major loans from international private collections and museums. Rotating presentations place prominent works in a new context to increase awareness of original artworks. In addition, Barberini Digital creates a virtual experience in providing additional context and aspects to engage virtually with the original artwork. <\/span><\/p>\n

The history of Barberini goes long back. Built in the 18<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> century, Barberini Palace was not only a prestigious residence but also open to the public and used as a venue to\u00a0stage art exhibits and cultural events. The building was largely destroyed in 1945 and its ruins demolished and removed. In 2005, the city resolved to reconstruct and revitalize what was formerly one of Europe’s most beautiful squares: The historic facades of several buildings were reconstructed and Barberini Palace, rebuilt along its original lines, set the tone for the ensemble.<\/span><\/p>\n

A visit to the stunning Museum Barberini is always a good reason for a trip to Potsdam, especially now that it is summer and you have the chance to see two masterful exhibitions: Picasso: The Late Work. From the collection of Jacqueline Picasso<\/b><\/a> until June 16 this year and Monet: Places,<\/a> <\/b>until June 1st, 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n
