An equivalent for something we believe to be out of reach.

The cosmos is unfathomably far away and one of the biggest remaining secrets of our time. Throughout the decades galaxies and their mysteries have filled a myriad of of science-fiction books, series or movies, crossing all cultural genres and ages. We have gone a long way in trying to discover and comprehend the universe but always reach a point where we fail to grasp its infinity. It goes far beyond our imagination, and this ambivalence of endless possibilities and human limitations adds to our unabated fascination with the cosmos.

There are ways and means to bring the universe closer to us and more approachable, both visually and substantial. Planetariums are buildings and architectures of longing, a gateway to the infinity of starry skies. The Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin with the massive silver globe is a state of the art stellar theatre and an impressive sight in itself. Built as one of the last flagship facility in the GDR it re-opened in 2016 as a modern science theater after comprehensive modernization and restoration and today is the most advanced and largest of its kind in Europe.

In the gigantic dome the entire spectrum of natural science is embraced to explore and enjoy space in all its facets. Computer animations illustrate the birth and death of stars; three-dimensional flights through distant galaxies and over planetary surfaces or full-dome multimedia installation of the collision of entire galaxies will leave the audience immersed in unfamiliar worlds.

Equipped with advanced digital and audio technology the stellar theatre brings forth new possibilities to explore and address the human relationship with the cosmos, such as music concerts, readings, movie screenings and interdisciplinary art projects. In bridging astronomy, science and culture the Zeiss Großplanetarium is creating unique emotional experiences.

So whether you are a science enthusiast or a lover of all things science-fiction since you were a kid; whether you are drawn to the infinite unknown of the universe or ever curious striving to expand your knowledge; whether you are an admirer of the visual aspects of foreign galaxies and star skies or you just go the planetarium as your favorite artist is playing there, each one of you will leave satisfied with a widened vision.

Zeiss-Großplanetarium

Prenzlauer Allee 80

10405 Berlin

–

Tuesday 09 – 5 pm

Wednesday – Thursday 09 – 8 pm

Friday 09 – 9:30 pm

Saturday 1 pm – 9:30 pm

Sunday 11:30 – 6:30 pm

Closed on Mondays

–

Have you ever been spellbound by a bright, full moon or lost yourself staring into a star spangled sky on a mild summer night, wishful?
