An abundance of castles and historic buildings, vast gardens and parks to get lost in and – decent coffee! Here is the gentle YUN guide to exploring Potsdam in a day, or two, or more if you like..

The best way to get to Potsdam is by train. From Potsdam central station we recommend walking and keeping your eyes open, as there are many historical buildings to see. Past Museum Barberini, the latest addition to local art scene with a focus on expressionist art, you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by the low red brick houses of the Dutch quarter. Built in the middle of the 18th century it now houses small art and craft shops, galleries, workshops and cafés. Oh yes, breakfast time!

Buena Vida Coffee Club is a specialty coffee shop and roastery. They emphasize regional products and sustainability, so you won’t find a lot of plastic here. Enjoy a coffee and one of the delicious pastries in the overall minimal, yet cozy space to start your Potsdam day just right.

Fully energized it’s time to explore the amazing greens and lakes of Potsdam. Heiliger See and the surrounding park with a unique combination of architecture and landscape gardening is particularly nice for a walk (or even a dip). It’s super peaceful, and quiet. At the north end of the park at the lakeside sits the Meierei, a craft beer brewery in an old dairy farm. In the beer garden you can relish a traditional German meal and beer along with an unparalleled view of the lake.

Ready for some real sightseeing? The stunning rococo Sanssouci Palace and its verdant gardens and terraced vineyards once were the summer home of Friedrich the Great. Translating to “without care” it was built as a quiet refuge back then and has lost none of its magic and charm. Located on the spreading grounds is the equally breathtaking stunning Neues Palais, the Chinese House and the Orangery. Walk, sit in the rose garden, and take in the beauty of this place, from another time.

Heading back towards the historic city center stop for a quick caffeine fix at Die Espressionisten. With a focus on Espresso they have been fostering the art of coffee in Potsdam since 2009! For those in need for a more indulgent treat, head to Café Guam. Specialized on traditional German cheesecakes, their huge selection with more than 30 varieties will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.

Heading back direction of Berlin, Studio Babelsberg could be the choice for you if you’re a cineaste. This film studio is the oldest running in the world. For those who would rather dwell in that relaxed state of mind an evening walk through the picturesque Park Babelsberg is recommended. Spoiler – there is another castle! The view on the lakes Tiefer See and Jungfernsee, the river Havel and the famous Glienicke Bridge is unique and a good closure of your day.

Tip: The short trip to Potsdam takes only about 30 minutes from central Berlin and with 3,20 € for the BVG ticket ABC more than worth the ride.

(2 1/2 MINUTE READ) ANOTHER WORLD, SO CLOSE only a short distance from the hectic, loud city of Berlin lies Potsdam, which offers a totally different vibe.
