BERLIN ATONAL
Music, lights and new expressions.
Summer is still in the air but the first falling leaves and chilled evenings are signs that autumn is emerging, bringing the the urge to head out and get lost in darker nights. Kraftwerk, the massive abandoned power plant with its industrial grandeur and monumentalism is just about the ideal space to house the avant-garde, experiential experience that is Berlin Atonal, a festival for sonic and visual art.
Initiated in 1982, Berlin Atonal was in the vanguard of the progressive experimental and electronic music and art scene in Berlin throughout the 1980s, but closed down in 1990. In 2013 it was relaunched and since this date the festival steps up again to give the stage to the musical avant-garde and pioneers. Each year the festival turns Kraftwerk into a weeklong experience of music, lights and new expressions, with acts ranging between traditional and modernist, featuring site-specific installations and audio-visual performances, as well as world premiere collaborations and a program of talks and workshops.
Berlin Atonal 2018 surprises with an line-up full of diverse genres ranging from adventurous new age to industrial, from techno and dark wave to ambient sounds. Using several locations in the vast Kraftwerk area, the festival will be hosting more than 100 acts and is more than just a regular festival, as it challenges our perceptions and stimulates our senses.
