Sustainable gifts you can buy in Berlin

Finding the perfect gift that is both useful and exciting can be a challenge and if you’re someone who likes to shop sustainably too, it can feel like a search for the Holy Grail. Berlin thankfully has a surplus of beautiful, independent shops that make sustainability their focus.

Here are some of our favourite gifts you can buy in the city.

A handmade candle from LitLab

Made from 100% ‘soy joy’, these babies are totally vegan and free from the harmful fumes that paraffin wax candles can emit. You can choose your own custom scent and explore fragrances like vanilla bean, toasted hazelnut, sugar plum, cotton and way more. After you’ve picked your scent combination, you can choose a hand-crafted, Bauhaus-inspired container and prepare to get lit!

The best part is that you can bring your empty container back and have it refilled with a brand new scent for as little as €6. Alternatively, you can keep the container and pot a little succulent. Reduce, reuse, recycle- refill!

A GOOD GUIDE

‘This Is A Good Guide’ is a modern handbook filled with practical tips on travelling, dressing, eating and working sustainably. Written by sustainable lifestyle expert, Marieke Eyskoot, this book focuses on green living in a totally doable and enjoyable way- in short, it’s a guide about being good, not perfect.

‘This Is A Good Guide’ would make a really thoughtful gift for the person in your life who wants to live a little more sustainably.

You can buy the book in Dussman and online too.

Original Unverpackt is the world’s first supermarket dedicated to a zero-waste lifestyle. They have two stores in Berlin and an online shop offering organic, natural and sustainable products.

Many of the carefully selected products in OU would make excellent stocking or boot fillers; check our their handmade soaps, bamboo cutlery set, glass straws or organic glitter for example!

If you want to go a step further, you could shop for your Christmas dinner ingredients here too, in a completely plastic-free way!

YUN glasses from the HANA collection

YUN frames from the HANA collection make a great gift for the sustainably minded. The high quality titanium used to make the frames abides by the slow fashion movement, since it is so long lasting.

This, coupled with the timeless, simple design that won’t go out of fashion quickly, makes the HANA glasses a great sustainable choice for someone in need of a new pair of specs.

You can also buy them a YUN voucher if you want to contribute towards the cost.

A notebook from Mimycri

Mimycri is a non-profit design venture. Their diverse and creative team make bags and books using refugee rubber boats as their main material. The idea to up-cycle these boats came when founders Nora and Vera volunteered in Greece where they were welcoming those arriving at the shores.

They have plenty of up-cycled products on their site, we particularly love the notebook. Every cover is made using discarded rubber that refugees once used to cross the Mediterranean and every page is made from 100% recycled paper. They feel handmade and premium at the same time and cost less than €25.

You can shop their notebook and other items here.

A reusable coffee cup from KaffeForm

More than just beautiful coffee cups, KaffeForm is a valuable resource- made from waste! The unique formula to these sustainable cups is made up of recycled coffee ground and renewable raw materials. Thanks to the innovative vision of the KaffeForm team, these sustainable yet stylish cups are now sold in cafes and shops all over Europe.

You can also buy directly from their site; choose from Weducer, Espresso, Cappacuino, or Milk Coffee Cup, all under €25
